The things that matter most are too often lost when we are trying to solve problems that involve people. A chief executive whose new initiative looked right on paper, yet a year later good people are walking out the door. A community where everyone can see the problem, but no two people can agree on what the problem actually is. A couple trying to find their way back to each other, each certain that the problem is the other person. A business owner that is working incredibly hard, but struggling to build the business they envisioned.
Different situations, different kinds of change. Yet underneath them all, there is something remarkably similar. The root cause of the problem is rarely where we think it is. And when we misdiagnose the problem, we can spend enormous amounts of time and energy trying to fix the wrong things. The challenges we see in change are a symptom of focusing on the wrong thing, not the cause of change failure. My work involves building frameworks to understand what we actually need to focus on and how to build a clear path to succeed in our transformation priorities.

A New Way to Think About Transformation

People don’t always share a clear understanding of the bigger goal or see how it matters to them. Once we are clear on where we want to go, we need to understand what is getting in the way: different needs, perspectives, priorities and ways of seeing the world that pull people in different directions. Transformation requires us to understand these tensions and how to create the conditions for people to move forward together. That is the art of building unity.
